Hodder to publish 50th anniversary classic edition of Stephen King’s Carrie in March 2024 with new introduction by Margaret Atwood

January 30, 2024

Hodder & Stoughton is thrilled to announce the publication of a stunning new hardback edition of Stephen King’s first bestseller Carrie, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the novel’s original release. The new edition will be published on 26th March 2024, just ahead of the anniversary on 5th April, and will include a brand new introduction by Margaret Atwood.

The edition will be the first in a new line of ‘Stephen King Classic’ hardbacks to be sold through the trade. Hodder has collaborated with Doubleday and Vintage Books in the US who are releasing an updated Fiftieth Anniversary Edition of Carrie in both trade paperback and mass market paperback with the same introduction by Margaret Atwood. Future ‘Stephen King Classic’ editions will include ‘Salem’s Lot in 2025, The Shining in 2027, The Stand and Night Shift in 2028.

Carrie, King’s legendary debut novel about a teenage outcast and the revenge she enacts on her classmates, set him on the road to becoming the global bestselling author he is today. The jacket for the new edition has been designed by Hodder Art Director Alasdair Oliver. Its release is an exciting highlight in a bumper year for Stephen King, and will be followed by the publication of You Like It Darker on 21st May, a collection of twelve thrilling stories, many of which have never been published before.

Philippa Pride, Stephen King’s UK editor, says: ‘As Stephen King explains in On Writing, he initially threw the early pages of the Carrie manuscript in the waste-basket. His wife, Tabby, discovered them, smoothed out the “crumpled balls of paper”, read them and said: “You’ve got something here”. He did – the start of a bestselling career and a book which would continue to resonate with readers half a century later. With its innovative themes and unique structure, Carrie would not only change the landscape of horror fiction but would influence generations of writers for over fifty years. We are hugely excited to be launching this exquisite new hardback edition to celebrate the jewel in a landmark year for Stephen King at Hodder, and are thrilled that the wonderful Margaret Atwood has written a fascinating introduction to his timeless classic.’
